hi thanks for sharing it was really informative i just wanted to ask to get the grade 9 do you need to make sure you talk about the beginning to end of the play in your essay as i noticed when you talked abut the end it was short but effective ive always written quite a long ending is this not necessary.I find it hard to almost stop writing ,as i feel like ille miss out important bits, due to wanting to write about everything that links to the theme or character do you have any tips on showing you have a good understanding of the play and picking out what to write about thankyou.
Hi Mariya, that's a great question! I had actually planned to write more about the end of the play, but I wrote too much about the very beginning. So the target for my next literature essay is to focus more on the end of the play so I cover more of the text. Additionally, I could have given a better overview of the play as a whole and its narrative structure.
I'm confident this essay would still secure a grade 9 because it covers enough, but I would advise you to write about the end as well in more detail than I've done in this essay.
It is very difficult to strike the balance between breadth and depth. It will help to plan the exact scenes you want to discuss and then try to write only about those scenes.
However, naturally, you want to bring in other ideas which pop-up, which is what I did. So to some extent, it will simply require practice.
Also, make sure you zoom out in your analysis to comment on Priestly's messages and the importance of the scene or character in relation to the whole text.
hi morgan, this was really helpful and we all appreciate ur help! i was wondering if you had any advice, knowing the content and analysis of quotes isnt a big problem for me personally, but putting it into an essay thats exceptional and persuassive is a different story. i attempt to make essay plans and practice by writing essays every so often, but i feel like its always missing something or i could do better. aside from this, could i ask ur thought process whilst writing such an amazing essay? thank you so much.
First, I would recommend that you really take your time trying to write high quality essays. You’ve probably had mocks so you should know how fast you write and what you can achieve generally under timed conditions. What’s important is developing skills which are going to secure you a top grade. TBH, I didn’t write this essay under timed conditions.
So, don’t simply smash out essays under timed conditions, but take your time writing high quality essays. Close read a scene and then write a paragraph about it in your essay.
You can spend an hour working on an essay one day and then another hour the next. Once some time has passed, you should be able to clarify and develop your thoughts and arguments.
While you have to know the whole text well, you only need to draw on a handful of moments for each character.
