I’m excited to share this 11 Plus paper from one of the top grammar schools in the country, Tiffin School. Download and attempt the paper here.
As these are just ‘illustrative questions’, the actual papers will probably be considerably longer.
However, there’s still a good number of questions to try for stages 1 and 2.
Below you can find my model solutions and guidance to the comprehension questions.
Next week, I’ll publish my response to the creative writing section.
Solutions
Stage One
B–majestic is not a feeling of happiness like the others.
E–contemporary means living in the same time or belonging to the present.
K
W–coughing makes the most sense as Anna Pavlovna seems to be afflicted by some kind of illness as suggested by the phrase ‘an attack of’.
C– alarming needs the suffix ‘ing’ to create the appropriate adjective to describe ‘spending an evening with a poor invalid’. Always read the full sentence to figure out the gist of the context.
X–it’s implied adults know a little bit about what happens in schools so this statement is false.
B–antibacterial products fight against or eliminate bacteria.
C– ‘twig’s’ doesn’t need a possessive apostrophe, but ‘Charlies’ does to indicate he owns the ‘missing Hat’.
A
Stage Two
‘Reluctant’ means unwilling.
‘Descending’ means going down.

Life is like the theatre or a play with people performing different roles and people changing their roles throughout their lives.
Hope is like a bird which soars, inspiring us to think bigger or more expansively. It also suggests hope makes us feel exuberant like a bird might in flight.
Visually, it suggests the islands are mountainous with many peaks as the mountains are compared to ‘broken teeth, jutting crookedly’. Additionally, the comparison of the mountains to ‘broken teeth’ suggests an ominous and dangerous atmosphere.
Faith probably has a good relationship with her younger brother as he sits on her lap even though he is six years older and must be heavy. Although Faith winces when Howard shifts in her lap, she doesn’t tell him to get off and answers his question. She comes across as a caring older sister.
Because Faith prefers to keep to herself and to ‘fade into the background’, yet she’s been asked to sit on a crate to prevent the crew moving it. They presumably find this irritating as they shoot her ‘resentful glares’ which makes Faith feel awkward and embarrassed.
Onions make you cry when you chop them and may be the only food that makes you cry from cutting into it, but so could a coconut thrown at your head.
